The Ignominy of the Devil – The Process

The Ignominy of the Devil is story number fifteen in the #52ShortStories challenge.

**SPOILERS BELOW. If you have not read the story and want to be (hopefully) surprised, come back to this when you’re done.**

A dark comedy.

I enjoy them, sure, but honestly never thought I’d write one. Turns out it’s a lot of fun! I took a page from Dean Wesley Smith and started this story with only a title in mind. I concatenated a few words from random pages in a W. B. Yeats collection of poems as well as an Edgar Allen Poe short story collection.

I then paid a visit to my neglected friend, Ye Olde Mind Map:

I’ve also been (slowly) reading Carrie Rubin’s excellent thriller Eating Bull, so there’s a hugely obvious influence on my POV character. The rest of the tale just kind of came through the whimsy of imagination. I guess it was the right story at the right time because I skipped out on two days of writing and still managed to finish it by Saturday.

This one was also another favorite of my first reader. She definitely likes my humorous stuff and she’s always been a fan of dark comedies, so I had a feeling she would dig this story. She even wants to make a short film of it, but would change the ending.

Guess you can’t completely please them. 🙂
